One of the clear signs that our politics is failing is that difficult issues keep getting kicked into the long grass. One such issue is adult social care which has been in need of reform for decades. It is easy for the Government to ignore a large part of it, because the financial burden gets passed on to local government.
Today the Archbishop of Canterbury has called for our social care system to be fixed. I am sure there are many who will demand that he should keep out of politics. But, he is right, and if he doesn’t do it who will? MPs should be demanding solutions from the Government and should be demanding that it is treated as a priority – but they aren’t.
We should also be clear what we mean by ‘fixed’ – that does not mean just throwing a bag of money at the problem, that is not a solution, that just guarantees it comes back again in a few years.
